The latest monthly report on our activities in Iraq covering the month of July 2010

In June, MAG Iraq Mine Action Teams (MAT) completed clearance operations in 8 prioritized clearance tasks in Diyala, Dohuk, Ninewa (Mosul), Sulimaniyah and Kirkuk governorates directly benefiting more than 2,752 individuals and support agricultural and socio-economic development in the region. Teams handed over 4 areas of cleared land. Two areas were handed over in Sulimaniyah and 2 in Dohuk. The cleared land will be used by local communities for agricultural and socioeconomic
development.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), in collaboration with The Jordan University Hospital, is holding a two-day exhibition entitled "MSF Convoy" featuring through several makeshift inflatable hospital tent set-ups the medical and humanitarian mission undertaken by its team of volunteers from all over the world. The tents include surgery theatres used in disaster areas, where MSF has a record of intervening within 48 hours. One tent is dedicated to treat acutely malnourished children.

The Danish Refugee Council initiated in 2007 a project funded by the UNCHR – Iraq (till 2009) aiming at building the capacity of the provincial authorities to respond to emergencies. The project’s idea was based on the instruction of the Iraqi Prime Minister during a governors’ meeting at the end of2006, where he stated the importance of establishincoordination structures in governorates in order to better address the humanitarian challenges generates by the displacement influxes.

In order to effectively contribute to Iraq's recovery, the EU and its member states, including the UK, should acknowledge the need for more significant and longer-term commitment.  Furthermore, they should improve aid effectiveness by ensuring more direct participation of the Iraqi people in the recovery processes.
