In response to key points raised during NCCI’s Annual General Assembly in March 2014, it was decided to review NCCI’s strategic approach in cooperation with its members. The objective was to develop a detailed observation of NCCI's current position within its mandate as a national forum in Iraq for NGO coordination, joint advocacy and information sharing. The identification of both strengths and weaknesses of NCCI’s current approach, combined with expected upcoming issues and humanitarian development needs of the people inside Iraq will be used to assess and plan NCCI’s future strategic role for the coming three years (2015 - 2016 - 2017).
The strategic review plan used a participatory-focused approach in cooperation with NCCI’s members, which consisted of two stages. The first stage consisted of a 20-questions survey, which assessed members’ perception of NCCI’s future role and deals with the accountability of members to contribute towards the success of NCCI, in order to achieve maximum effectiveness.
These survey results formed the basis of discussions during the second stage of the strategic review plan: the Extraordinary General Assembly / Strategic Review Workshop that took place on Monday November 17th in the Classy hotel in Erbil. The workshop was attended by 20 national and international NGOs. In the course of the day, members elected new Board members, analyzed the current operating environment in Iraq, decided upon a new mission statement for NCCI, discussed NCCI’s strengths and weaknesses and came to an agreement on new key objectives for NCCI.
Within the next two weeks a post-workshop report will be published, which will confirm NCCI’s mission statement, structure and objectives, and will provide recommendations for the next 3 years. This report will provide a framework for the new NCCI Strategic Plan to be developed by the NCCI secretariat.
