Supporting the UN Cluster System

The United Nations’ offices in Baghdad are based in the heavily protected International Zone, where access is difficult for international NGOs and almost impossible for national NGOs. Accessing the UN compound in Erbil can also be time-consuming and cumbersome due to different security measures.

In order to ensure maximum NGO participation in the UN Cluster coordination structure, and to avoid having to go through multiple security checks, the NGO Coordination Committee for Iraq (NCCI) has been facilitating Cluster meetings either by providing an audio connection or by hosting the meetings in NCCI’s offices in Baghdad or Erbil.

On 12th February NCCI hosted a WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) Cluster meeting at its office in Baghdad. This was the first meeting for the WASH Cluster for central and southern Iraq that NCCI facilitated. The meeting was attended by representatives from UN agencies, international and national NGOs, as well as delegates from the Iraqi government. The meeting focused on the new structure of the WASH cluster and the current WASH response in central and southern Iraq. The participants discussed the critical WASH sites, needs, gaps, strategy and the response plan for 2015.
