NRC’s humanitarian response to the displacement in Heet District
NRC is currently delivering food rations, water, hygiene items, and buckets in Kilo 18 camp through local partners in order to reach out to over 3,000 newly displaced families from Heet District. NRC has also started trucking water to the camps as of Monday 15th March to provide safe drinking water and water for domestic purposes.
NRC is currently only providing emergency lifesaving immediate support (including water and food) to newly displaced families as serious protection concerns remain around the location of the camps (close to the frontline, in unsafe locations, and difficult to access).
Gender-Based Violence prevention and response: International Women’s Day
To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th 2016, NRC held events in all of its locations for both refugee and IDP communities. NRC showcased a brief film that was produced in time for the event, distributed 6000 bracelets made by female community members that participate in NRC’s activities, to women and girls from communities in IDP camps and urban areas with a message on gender parity. Throughout all NRC’s Al Waha Centres, IWD was celebrated through music, dancing, poetry, games and awareness – raising.
NRC continues to provide support to formal schools in refugee as well as internally displaced persons camps in Erbil and Dohuk. Last week, NRC staff visited 192 tents to follow up on absence cases and to engage parents and children in discussions on the value of education.
Further, NRC gave catch-up classes in a variety of fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry and Arabic language. NRC also supports formal schools inside camps in Erbil by distributing teacher kits.
In order to support teachers and build their capacity, NRC hosted a teacher training in Harshm camp for 19 teachers and provided psychosocial support sessions for 45 teachers in Khabat.
Last week NRC initiated recreational activities in music, art and sport to 376 children and youth in Harhsm camp for internally displaced persons in Erbil.
