NRC - Weekly Activity Update 20 September 2016

Baghdad
Last week NRC signed contracts with landlords in preparation for rehabilitation of shelters for internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently residing in Dora, Radhwaniya, Abu Ghraib and Ameriyat Al-Fallujah in Anbar. NRC also continued with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities in the Ameriyat Al-Fallujah complex and Bzeibez area by conducting water trucking.

IDPs from Anbar as well as recently displaced people from Ninewa received legal assistances through NRC’s Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA) projects. Further, Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) support was provided to IDPs in camp and non-camps settings in Ameriyat Al-Fallujah, Habaniya Tourist City, and Khalidiya.

NRC also continued to distribute cash to IDPs in Anbar.  The cash assistance is meant to provide displaced people with the opportunity to make their own decisions on how to best meet their needs to access basic services.

Education activities in Erbil

On 15 September, the NRC Education Team hosted the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Antony Blinken and his consular delegation at Harshm Camp primary school. Their aim was to learn more about the challenges facing IDP children in obtaining their education through dialog with Non-Government Organisations and teachers. The delegation observed several language and math classes provided by the NRC summer school team, in addition to viewing a Better Learning Programme (BLP) session and learning more about the psychosocial support needs of children and youth in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Emergency response

In Debaga camp for IDPs, NRC distributed Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) kits to 1,029 families who arrived to the camp last week. The families are been displaced from Qayara, Hawija, Qaraj, Bijil and areas in and around Mosul. The kits contain clean drinking water and food parcels, dignity kits, hygiene kits and baby kits in addition to buckets. NRC also continues the daily distributions of RRM kits to newly displaced populations in Anbar.
