Handicap International - Emergency Response for Internally Displaced Persons with Specific Needs

Handicap International launched in June an emergency response for rapid support to specific needs of People with Disabilities and Injuries within the displaced populations that fled the conflicts in Iraq. Around 300,000 people left the conflict areas after the fall of Mosul (second largest Iraqi city) and looked for safe haven in Northern Iraq where the organization was already active over the past years. Handicap International focuses on the identification of special needs, development of individual rehabilitation action plans, referral of identified cases as per individual special needs and provision of mobility aids and assistive devices. Handicap International also providestechnical support to the other humanitarian actors for ensuring a more inclusive emergency response. After a week, already 164 cases were identified with 44% of people affected by disability and 46% by chronic diseases.
