The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, accompanied by his Deputy for Political and Electoral Affairs, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin and UNAMI’s Principal Electoral Advisor today visited the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and met its Chairman and Board of Commissioners. Mr. Mladenov reiterated assurances of continued United Nations support for the challenging work being undertaken to hold historic elections of the Council of Representatives and the KRG Governorate Councils’ elections, both scheduled for 30 April 2014. Highlights Kurdistan Region of Iraq 1,560 Syrian refugee households received fuel in February to assist with heating and cooking. DRC is targeting 1,100 households (75% Syrian refugees and 25% host communities) for job placements and assistance to set up small business. In Baghdad 149 women have received tool kits to enhance their livelihoods through vocational skills and small business activities. Kullina Muwatinin is a program developed by PAX and its partners in Iraq and Syria to promote citizenship and prevent sectarian tensions and violence in Iraq and Syria. The program seeks to empower young people and local actors to advocate towards respect for rights and diversity, who will engage in dialogue to produce a new discourse to improve religious freedom and minority rights. The program is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands and the European Union will run from 2012 to 2016.
