Heavy rain in Baghdad city and its suburbs today is leaving behind flooding, hitting mostly the poorest areas in the capital, where there is also the highest concentration of IDPs. However, the IDPs that are mostly and severely affected by the recent floods are those residing in camps and deserted non-residential buildings.
Mercy Hands has been receiving numerous calls today from IDPs affected by the floods, in Baghdad and elsewhere, asking for urgent help. One of them was speaking on behalf of 35 families (190 person) IDPs from Al-Anbar governorate residing in a deserted non-residential compound in Abu Ghraib. They are severely affected by the heavy rain and in dire need for clothes, blankets, mattresses, and other NFIs. Attached are pictures of their compound taken by our Emergency Response team prior to the flood.
We are coordinating and sharing information with all active players on ground, governmental and non-governmental, to assist those affected by the floods, and this letter is part of that coordination effort.
