UNAMI - “Everyone can meaningfully participate in community reconciliation,” UN Envoy says on Human Rights Day

Baghdad, 10 December 2013 – On Human Rights Day, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, called on all sectors of Iraqi society to work together to find constructive ways to ensure the peaceful resolution of tensions that are fueling violence, discord and division. “Everyone in Iraq can meaningfully participate in community reconciliation and promotion of justice, in non-violent and constructive ways”, Mr. Mladenov said.

The UN Envoy noted that many of the political, ethnic, and sectarian tensions underlying the current violence in Iraq are rooted in violations and abuses of human rights and lack of respect for the rule of law that have persisted over many years. “Policies aimed at enhancing access to justice, that promote respect for rule of law and human rights, and that foster economic and social development of all Iraq’s people, irrespective of their ethnic or religious background, disability, gender or social status, must be developed and implemented, so that each and every Iraqi citizen feels encouraged to play a positive role in the future of their country,” Mr. Mladenov concluded.
