The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) Mr Nickolay Mladenov, today welcomed the decisions by the Council of Ministers of Iraq concerning the Anbar Province, calling them "a positive step in addressing the security and humanitarian situation in the province".

"The proposed plan includes many of the ideas that have been discussed among the political parties and provide a good basis for national agreement.  I encourage the tangible and timely implementation of the plan on the basis of broad agreement.  UNAMI is ready to support all initiatives that will allow the people of Iraq to live free of the fear of terror in a democratic society that is built on the rule of law and the protection of human and minority rights" he added.

The United Nations welcomes the allocation of additional compensation and reconstruction funds for civilians who suffered most from the violence, as well as the initiative to organise an Iraqi general conference to address issues of national unity and sectarianism.

Mr Mladenov also expressed his support to the people of Anbar in their fight against terrorism and called for continued cooperation in the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the fighting.
