Baghdad, 7 September 2013 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has been informed that the Government of Iraq has served an order to relocate the remaining residents of Camp Ashraf to Camp Hurriya. This year’s Franco-Arab Film Festival marks a turning point in the event’s maturity cycle. Organized by the Institut Français, the Royal Film Commission and other entities, the festival will be held in Jordan, Palestine and France, and for the first time this year, also in Lebanon and Iraq.
Erbil, 29 August 2013 (UNESCO) - The United Nations Education and Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Norwegian Refugees Council (NRC) are joining efforts with partners from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), sister UN agencies, national and international NGOs to address the critical and urgent educational needs of Syrian refugees in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I). From August 27 until the 29 August 2013, UNESCO and NRC are organizing a pioneering workshop in Erbil, KR-I, aiming at strengthening the capacity of education institutions and stakeholders in KRI to respond effectively and comprehensively to the current crisis. On September 15, 2013, a flotilla of traditional Mesopotamian boats will embark down the Tigris River on an historic voyage of celebration, education, and data collection. Over the course of several weeks and over 1200 kilometers flowing from southeastern Turkey to southern Iraq, the Tigris River Flotilla will celebrate the cultural heritage of Mesopotamia, bring environmental awareness to riverside communities, and study the river's current hydrological condition. Throughout the course of the journey, participants from different countries will float down the river using modern and traditional boats. Baghdad, 19 August 2013 – Wrapping up a two-day visit to Iraq, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman today participated in a ceremony in Baghdad marking the 10th anniversary of the 2003 Canal Hotel bombing, one of the most devastating attacks in the history of the United Nations. “Ten years ago, 22 cherished United Nations staff members and colleagues perished in a horrific attack that still reverberates in our hearts and in our memory,” said Mr. Feltman.
